Every job posting we scan gets checked against two California labor rules: SB 1162 pay transparency and the IWC Wage Order 4-2001 hand-tool provision (the $33.80/hour threshold in 2026). This week we ran that check across a sample of live Craigslist postings for four Bay Area trades — electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and solar installers — to see how common these issues actually are.
We ran LocalShield's automated scanner against live Craigslist postings for "Electrician," "HVAC Installer," "Plumber," and "Solar Installer" across the San Francisco Bay Area, then de-duplicated to 40 unique, individually verifiable postings — dropping anything that looked like a repeat or a generically-named listing we couldn't confidently attribute to one employer.
The bigger issue by far was SB 1162, not the hand-tool provision. Most non-compliant postings simply didn't include a real wage range — a floor-only rate ("From $28/hr") or no pay information at all, both of which fall short of the "good-faith range" the law requires for employers with 15+ employees.
